DEMETER, named after the Goddess of the harvest, is a highly purified organic mineral that can be used in stored grains in both silos and floor storage systems to reduce the number of spoilage pests.


THE PRODUCT:

DEMETER is a purified silicate mineral formed, many millions of years ago, from the remains of silica-shelled diatoms. It is not calcined.

DEMETER is a very effective drying agent and kills insects by desiccation. It has been assessed under the Control of Pesticides Regulations 1986 (COPR) for use as a pesticide.

The product has been approved by the FDA in the USA and has been awarded a rating of ‘Food Chemical Codex Grade’ and in Europe it can be used in animal feeds under EC Directive 70/524, and its amendments, with an E number E 551c.

DEMETER can be used in stored grains to control weevils and other insect pests.

MODE OF ACTION:

  • It has a high oil binding capacity, which enables it to be used as an insecticide.
  • The fine particles attach to the waxy cuticle of the insects and then act as an abrasive on the cuticle itself. This damage results in loss of moisture, which kills the insect.
  • It has a purely physical mode of action and contains no chemical pesticides.

MAJOR BENEFITS:

  • It kills insects by desiccation, without the need for chemical pesticides.
  • DEMETER is more abrasive than silica gel and is therefore more effective, against grain weevils.
  • Insects are killed within 3 days of direct contact with DEMETER.

USAGE:

USAGE:
In line with HGCA recommendations.

Pre-Harvest:
Treat the fabric of the empty storage silo or storage area with a powder fogger at the rate of 30 g/m2

Silo* and Floor† storage of grain:
DEMETER is used for surface treatment of stored grain.

Prevention:
Treat the top 30 cm with 200 g/m2 which equates to ~ 1 kg/t.

Infested grains:
Treat the top 30 cm with 600 g/m2 which equates to ~ 3 kg/t.

* Admix to the appropriate tonnage to cover the silo to a depth of 30 cm.
† Rake in.

NOTE: Surface treatments should be combined with drying and cooling for maximum effect.

SAFETY:
DEMETER is non-toxic to animals and man. It is safe for the environment and will not harm biological control systems. DEMETER contains <1% free silicates.

PACKAGING AND STORAGE:
DEMETER is double-bagged, in 25kg plastic sacks, for easier handling.
