| New guidelines are being proposed
for the UK poultry industry to satisfy
both domestic consumers and the major
supermarkets who are fighting for
market share. Just recently the
Poultry Action Group, under the
guise of the Institute of Grocery
Distribution has announced that
it is to launch its Chicken Assurance
Scheme on 29th March. The Scheme
comprises the following Standards:
- Poultry Standards
- Chickens
- Poultry Standards
- Breed layers
- Poultry Standars
- Breeder Replacements
- Catching, Transport and Slaughter
Standards
- Hatchery Standards
There are three Poultry Standards
that contain a section on "Feed
and Water". These sections
demand that:
Poultry producers must be able to
demonstrate the following three
points:
- Feeds must not contain meat
and bone meal or poultry by-products
meal.
- Feeds must not contain antibiotic
growth promoters.
- Compound feed must be obtained
from a feedmill currently compliant
with the UKASTA Code of Practice.
Feed must be heat-treated and/
or treated with organic acids.
(In the Breeder Replacement Standard,
this provision reads "Compound
is to be sourced from a mill currently
compliant with the UKASTA Code
of Practice for the Manufacture
of Safe Compound Animal Feedingstuffs.
Feed must be heat-treated And/or
treated with organic acids and/or
their salts").
Feed delivery tickets are to be
retained for each flock for at least
one year and samples of each delivery
of feed are to be retained for 3
months.
This confirms the end of the growth
promoter and the acceptance of organic
acids as biosecurity measures.
